    FORDHAM 69,  St. Bonaventure 62

Fordham (12-16, 6-10) won a must-win game over St. Bonnies (8-22, 2-14) to guarantee themselves a spot in the Atlantic-10 tournament this week in Atlantic City. This was nip and tuck throughout with six ties and thirteen lead changes, as the Bonnies did not go down without a fight in their final game of the season.

Bryant Dunston lead the way for the Rams with 12 points and 11 rips and Marcus Stout chipped in with a game-high 21 points. The Bonnies outstanding Senior Forward Michael Lee was plagued by foul trouble throughout the night before finally fouling out.  He walked off the court for the final time and, in doing so, capped a terrific season and career with 12 points and 6 rips. Senior Guard Tyler Relph also had a solid finish to his career with 20 points.

    DAYTON 79,  Saint Joseph’s 67

Dayton (20-9, 8-8) came up big over Saint Joe’s (18-11, 9-7) as they continued their late-season push to gain the NCAA Selection Committee’s attention for an at-large bid. The win was the third straight for the Flyers, who were led in this one by Marcus Johnson’s 17 points and 7 rips and Brian Roberts’ 15 points and 6 assists.  Roberts was also four of five from beyond the arc. A great team effort, as Johnson and Roberts were only two of five Flyers in double figures.

    Dayton  78,  ST. BONAVENTURE  73

On Senior Night, the Bonnies (8-21, 2-13) showed plenty of heart but ultimately fell to Dayton in a nip and tuck game.  Dayton (19-9, 7-8) raced out to an early seventeen point lead, but St. Bonaventure, led by Michael Lee (27 pts., 9 reb.), Tyler Relph (20 pts., 6 reb.) and Zarryon Fereti (16 pts.) dug deep and battled back to tie the game by the half.

St. Bonaventure shot 52% (13-25) from three-point range in the game.  It wasn’t enough, even at home, to subdue a Flyers team determined to earn the road win and inch a step closer to evening up their conference record.  As usual, Brian Roberts led the Flyers, scoring 24 points in 35 minutes of action.  Andres Sandoval and Marcus Johnson also scored in double-figures, with 13 points apiece.  A model of offensive efficiency, Dayton shot 60% for the game.

    TEMPLE 90, Duquesne  85

Dionte Christmas did his best to support the argument he deserves strong consideration for Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.  The junior poured in 37 points on 12-23 shooting (9-9 from the charity stripe) in leading Temple (17-12, 10-5) to a victory over Duquesne.  More importantly, he carried the Owls on his back during a critical stretch in the second half where Duquesne had sliced a double-digit Temple lead to just one.

St. Bonaventure 70 SAINT LOUIS 50

This is the type of game that the upperclassmen of the Bonnies deserved. Senior Guard Tyler Relph put St. Bonaventure (8-20, 2-12 A-10) on his shoulders and rained three’s on an overwhelmed Billikens bunch as he led the Bonnies to a very satisfying 20-point road victory, their first of the season. Relph was 6-6 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 25 points, 4 rips, 4 assists. His running mate Michael Lee finished with 16 as the Bonnies played their normal 5-man ‘rotation’. Their entire bench contributed just 24 minutes played.

Saint Louis (16-13, 7-8 A-10) was caught looking past this game, as no one showed up to play. Not one starter scored in double-digits, they were outrebounded by ten and had fewer assists than the Bonnies. These stats will lead to a loss nearly every time. Kevin Lisch was the one bright spot, as he finished with 19 points, 5 rips and 4 assists coming off of the bench on Senior Day.

    Rhode Island 91 LASALLE 85

Chalktalk’s surprise team of the year met the most disappointing team of the year and you’ll never guess who came out on top.

    Round-Up - February 27, 2008

    Thursday, February 28th, 2008

GEORGE WASHINGTON 85, Rhode Island 68

George Washington (9-14, 5-8) took an early lead in this one and never looked back as they cruised to a 17 point win over the Rams. Noel Wilmore led the Colonials with 24 points off the bench and Damian Hollis chipped in with 22 as GW slashed and shot their way to the victory, controlling the perimeter game and exposing a flawed Rhode Island defense.

Rhode Island (20-9, 6-8) never got their fast break offense ramped-up as a result of their aforementioned defensive weaknesses. They managed to force only 6 turnovers, a dagger to any team that relies on transition as much as Rhode Island. Will Daniels was solid, yet unspectacular, as he dumped in 24 points for the Rams.

    TEMPLE 75, Charlotte 61

The Owls (15-12, 8-5) continued their solid play at the Liacouras Center last night. They limited Charlotte (15-12, 6-7) to only 61 points on abysmal 31% shooting from the field and 27% from behind the arc. In the process, Mr. Three-Pointer Himself, Leemire Goldwire, was held to just 3 points.

Temple had three scorers in double figures, led by Dionte Christmas’ 19 points. As a team, the Owls shot a blistering 53% behind the three point line and connected on 83% of their freebies in the win.

    Xavier 57, DAYTON 51

Xavier (24-4, 12-1) rattled off their tenth straight win in A-10 play as they assured themselves of at least a share of the 2007-2008 A-10 title by outlasting rival Dayton at UD Arena. Josh Duncan led the way for the Musketeers with 14 points off the bench. No Musketeer took more than seven shots from the field, as Xavier showcased their teamwork and solid effort from all corners.

The Flyers (17-9, 5-8) were led by 15 points from Brian Roberts, but he was the only Flyer in double-digits. The loss is a tough one for Dayton. In addition to losing to their rival for the second time this season, they failed to register a big win to psychologically escape from their funk, which began mid-season. Dayton dropped to twelfth place in the A-10 with the loss and, in the process, placed increased pressure on themselves to right their ship fast simply to qualify for the A-10 tournament.

    UMASS 79, St. Bonaventure 56

Led 18 points and 16 rips from Gary Forbes, UMass took an early lead in this one and never looked back. Taking care of business as they should, the Minutemen solidified their chances for a post-season berth by improving to 18-9 overall and 7-6 in A-10 play.
