Sunday, April 27th, 2008By: Regular Guest Contributor, Ray Floriani (Basketball Times/Hoopville); with input from CCT Staff.
LYNDHURST, NJ - With both an exciting and resurgent season for the Atlantic 10 in the books, it’s time to look at the “synergy” of the Atlantic 10 teams. The statistical formula for the concept of synergy is as follows:
Synergy = Field Goal Percentage + (Assists/Field Goals Made)
(Note: Only A-10 Conference Games were included in calculation)
Synergy provides an indication of how well teams share the basketball. A figure over 1.000 is very good, however, like any statistic, a synergy figure is subject to interpretation, analysis and criticism in certain cases.
While not all teams that fall below the 1.000 mark are subpar, some may be, since a team must make its attempts to increase it’s synergy rating. Overall, the statistic is simply an indication of offensive tendency. Teams which run a fair amount of motion or flex should register higher on the synergy scale than those with guards looking to clear out or utilize the first ball screen for a shot attempt. At any rate, the final figures are as follows:
Xavier 1.112
Temple 1.084
Duquesne 1.062
Saint Joe’s 1.029
Richmond 1.027
Recruiting Update: Duquesne
Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008By: Guest Columnist, Patrick Herward (OntheBluff.com)
Duquesne’s 2008 recruiting class continues to evolve.
On Monday, it was reported that Alabama point guard Chase Robinson committed to the Dukes. Robinson is a 6′2″, 185 lb. point guard who was receiving interest from schools around the nation. Among those expressing interest at one point or another were a number of southern schools, including Missouri, Auburn, Georgia Tech, South Carolina and national runner-up Memphis. In addition, schools outside of the Alabama geographic region such as Colorado State, George Mason, Penn State, St Bonaventure and - of course - Duquesne were heavily involved.
Robinson is best described as a scorer. He has an above average jumper and is not afraid to take the ball strong to the rim. He played in an up-tempo offense similar to that of Duquesne in high school, which should ease his transition. If he can consistently make shots, he should receive an opportunity to play a fair amount as a freshman.
When asked why he selected the Dukes, Robinson mentioned that very opportunity to play early, along with the solid relationship he formed with the coaching staff, as the driving factors in his decision.
NBA Draft - A Quick Survey of the Mock Draft Landscape

Portsmouth Invitational - Final Day
Monday, April 14th, 2008On the final day of the PIT, two pure consolation games, a third place game and the Championship were played at Churchland High School. The following are brief breakdowns on the performance of each A-10 Player:
Parfait Bitee (URI), PIT Team (CB & H) -
In his final game, Bitee helped his CB & H team salvage a victory, while sending Holiday Inn to a winless weekend. Because two CB & H players (Patrick Ewing and Joe Crawford) did not play, they dressed just six. The result was extended minutes for Bitee. He scored 10 points and dished out 3 assists in his team’s fourteen point win. A nice showing for a player very few anticipated being invited to the PIT back in November 2007.
Brian Roberts (UD), PIT Team (Holiday Inn) -
Roberts wrapped up his PIT campaign with 13 points in a losing effort. He played 29 minutes, was a perfect 3-3 from the line and had 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Once again, however, Roberts was unable to put up numbers across the board that are likely to garner much attention. While he may still receive a summer league invite, it doesn’t appear from his stat line that Roberts was able to demonstrate the ability to orchestrate an offense. He registered just 6 assists in three games played at the tournament.
Portsmouth Invitational - Days 1, 2 & 3
Saturday, April 12th, 2008The first three days of the PIT are in the books. The following is an update on the performance of all participating A-10 players:
Josh Duncan (XU), PIT Team (Tidewater Sealants) -
Along with two other A-10 Players on Tidewater, Duncan helped his team coast to a 99-81 victory over Team Holiday Inn in the opening game of the tournament. The former XU forward scored 14 points and grabbed 7 boards in 25 minutes of action. He shot a fairly efficient 5-12 from the field, which included a 2 of 4 effort from beyond the arc, an area of Duncan’s game which makes him attractive to pro scouts. In his second game - a win over Norfolk Naval Shipyard - Duncan shot an identical 5 of 12 from the field, but struggled from long range, shooting 0 for 4. He once again snared 7 boards in just under 30 minutes of action, as Tidewater advanced to the Championship Game of the PIT to be held tonight at 8:00 PM.
Mark Tyndale (TU), PIT Team (Tidewater Sealants) -
