    Round-Up

    LASALLE 84, St. Bonaventure  61

Guess the Bonnies (6-14, 0-6) didn’t want that road win after-all.  After connecting on just 2 of 7 three point attempts versus Saint Louis, Darnell Harris dropped all 7 of his attempts in this one and finished with 23 points.  LaSalle (8-11, 3-3) pummeled SBU,  making 13 threes in the first half alone en route to assuming a commanding 17 point lead by the half.  It was academic from there as the Explorers played out the string for an easy triumph.

    DAYTON  63,  Saint Louis  36

Saint Louis (11-9, 2-4) reached back into their bag of offensive futility and, unfortunately, found plenty.  The Billikens were a model of consistency scoring 18 in each frame.  The problem was Wooden Award candidate Brian Roberts matched one of those halves, himself, scoring 18 (7-8 from the field, including 4-4 from long range) in this one.  The Flyers pounded Saint Louis on the glass, 32-16, and used a 9-2 run at the end the first half to spark the win.   With the win, the Flyers (15-4, 3-3) halted a three game losing streak.  Tommy Liddell led the Billikens (10 pts., 4 reb.) in the loss.

Staff Predictions: St. Bonaventure @ LaSalle

    Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

We begin the second week of ‘Staff Predictions’ with a look back at last week’s results picking the Saint Joseph’s/UMass game.

If Chris DiSano hit it any closer it would have been a dead-ringer.  81-77 Saint Joseph’s was his prediction, 80-76 in favor of the Hawks was the final.  Andrew was right there too, taking the Hawks, 84-78.

The others all took UMass.  B-10 said Minutemen by 6, CKM had 7, and somewhere Joe Lunardi is smiling after JMR called him out, going with UMass by 10.

This week, it’s the Bonnies traveling to Tom Gola Arena to face the Explorers.

    Andrew:

Lack of depth continues to plague St. Bonaventure.  La Salle had 48 rebounds in the first meeting. St. Bonaventure is (-3.3) in rebound margin and Jerrell Williams is coming off back-to-back 11 rebound games.  The Bonnies drop to 0-11 on the road.

    ________________________________________

    CKM:

The Bonnies and yours truly have something in common:  neither of us has won a game (or picked one correctly as is the case for me) so far this A-10 season.  Unfortunately for the faithful in Olean, or perhaps fortunately given my record, I don’t see the first road win in the Mark Schmidt era coming in Philly against LaSalle.  LaSalle went up to St. Bonaventure earlier in the month and handed the Bonnies an 11-point loss at home.  There is nothing to indicate that the results of this one shouldn’t be similar.

    From the Sideline… Part Two

    Travis Ford - UMass

On areas in need of improvement: Ford stressed that rebounding is key and that, while UMass is not a big team, laziness on the glass and poor positioning are as much to blame - yet are capable of being corrected.  Ford also spoke of the importance of limiting fouls (UMass opponents have made over 80 trips to the line in the last 2 games) and how fouling is a double-edged sword, limiting their ability to push the pace as well.

On the state of the offense:  UMass is a relatively young squad, particularly those on the bench.  The result is added pressure on the starters to be productive, which can backfire at times.  As the bench matures, the offense will establish continuity and become more refined.  Right now, it can be a struggle.

    Karl Hobbs - George Washington

On his team:  His team is a work in progress, they are a long way away and must be rebuilt brick by brick.  He suggested he does not have any real clear cut expectations.  In responding to the question “which GW player has surprised him”, Hobbs said nobody had surprised him.

    From the Sideline… Part One

    Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

What does your coach think about how his team is playing right now?  Here’s a summary of what each had to say in this week’s Coaches Teleconference:

    Bobby Lutz - Charlotte

On his team:  Lutz is pleased that the ‘Niners are starting to become - as we’ve noted here - a more balanced team on a consistent basis.  He is pleased with the integration of the new players on his roster and with Michael Gerrity, the Pepperdine transfer, who is becoming more and more comfortable in the offense.  He also made specific mention of the development of Phil Jones and Charles Dewhurst.

On strides made:  Lutz is also happy with the way his team appears to be limiting turnovers and valuing every possession, something not demonstrated at the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign.

On being one win from tying Jeff Mullins for all-time wins at Charlotte:  Lutz is extremely humbled.  He praised Mullins for hiring him and giving him his initial opportunity at the collegiate level.  Not bad for a fella who quit law school to become a Junior Varsity coach and eventually got his chance.

    Chris Mooney - Richmond

On the Dayton win:  His players are gaining confidence each step they take, feeling validated by these accomplishments.

    Thanks

Two weeks since the launch of this new layout, the response has been great.  We’d like to thank all of our readers for checking in regularly.

The early reports show site visits from all over the country and world, including visits from areas where we know there are men and women in the armed forces, stationed abroad… we’d like to take a moment to recognize them and hope they return home safely.

    Thanks again.
