    Things looking up for Spiders?

    Monday, December 31st, 2007

After a hard fought victory over VMI on Sunday, Richmond won its second straight and leveled its record at 6-6 in the process. An important game looms against Virginia Tech on January 3rd, where the Spiders hope to show strong once again.

Against VMI, it was a contrast in styles… but the Spiders imposed their will in this one. While promising freshman point guard Kevin Anderson is still adjusting to the speed and pressure of the college game, he did a solid job running the show (12pts., 3 asts., 2 turnovers) considering the frenetic pace at which VMI wants to play.

Richmond was able to tire out the keydets with relentless ball reversal throughout the game. This not only affected VMI on the defensive end but wore their jump shooters as the game progressed. Dan Geriot, the key to Richmond’s offense, operated like a surgeon from the high post, either knocking down 12-15 footers (10 pts.) or drawing collapsing attention from the zone and finding wide open teammates for buckets (5 asts.). Athletic teams are going to have to honestly (i.e. no overplay of passing lanes) man-up Richmond, because Geriot is a zone killer.

David Gonzalvez, the well rounded sophomore from Marietta, Georgia, continues to improve his decision-making and shooting. The 6′4″ Guard is now shooting 43% from long range, up an impressive 13% from last year’s 30.4%. Against VMI, he tallied 11 points and was 3-4 from beyond the arc. Important for both Gonzalvez and the Spiders, as those shots will be available in the motion offense throughout the year.

Ranked Rams Shoot for 2nd Tourney Title in ‘07

    Saturday, December 29th, 2007
The lone ranked team in the Atlantic 10 is looking to take home it’s second tournament title in as many tries this evening as the Rhode Island Rams (12-1, 25th in AP and ESPN polls) face off against the Georgia Southern Eagles (9-2) in the championship game of the Islander Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.

Strangely, this is the second tournament that both the Rams and Eagles have taken part in together. Earlier in the season, they both saw action in the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida, but never faced each other. Rhode Island went on to win the tournament.

The streaking Rams are looking to keep up their good form and move up the rankings with another tournament title in hand. URI is led by All-Atlantic 10 star, Will Daniels. The senior averages 18.2 points a contest, and pulls down 7.1 boards a game. The Runnin’ Rams are also aided by three point threat, Jimmy Baron (pictured). The sharpshooter averages 15.6 points a game, and has made good on 44 of his 97 three point attempts, good enough for a very solid 45%.

    Resumes, Anyone? (Part Two)

    Friday, December 21st, 2007
In continuing our resume look - as promised - UMass and Dayton:

    Massachusetts Minutemen - (8-2)
RPI: 13 AP: 37 Coaches: NR

    Resume Builders: 107-100 @ Syracuse; 83-80 v. Boston College
Typos: 89-77 loss @ IUPUI (although the Jaguars are better than casual fans know)
Professional Advice: The Minutemen must beat C. Conn. State and Boston University, then split with Houston and Vanderbilt. This will position them at no less than 10-4 heading into conference play. From that point, they must win no less than 12 games in conference play and avoid a first round A-10 upset. However, should they beat Houston and upset the Commodores @ Memorial Gym (Vandy should be 14-0 heading into that game), they’ll be less pressure on UMass to roll through a tough, unbalanced conference slate where they play URI, St. Joe’s and St. Louis twice each.

    Dayton Flyers - (8-1
    RPI: 16 AP: 29 Coaches: 37

Resume Builders: 63-62 @ Miami of Ohio; 70-65 @ then No. 11 Louisville
Typos: 67-56 loss @ George Mason (not a huge blemish, but GMU must get on track after losses to East Carolina and Kent State)
Professional Advice: Dayton has three winnable non-conference games upcoming versus American, Loyola (MD) and Akron. Needless to say they must win all three. An excellent opportunity exists against No. 9 Pittsburgh on December 29th. Get this one and it would be the Flyers second win against a ranked Big East team, aiding their own cause and helping the conference as well. Dayton has URI, Xavier and St. Louis twice each on the unbalanced conference schedule, so anything more than 11-5 may be ambitious. Assuming they do finish at 11-5, a semifinal appearance in the A-10 tourney is a must.
